The International Conference on Integrated Care (ICIC24) has taken place in Belfast, Northern Ireland, April 22-24 2024. There has been more than 1100 participants from 50 different countries. It has been a very interesting conference with focus on how we better can build integrated care pathways and systems for better planning for patient care. There has been several sessions on how digital technologies can pave the way for more integrated care and many good examples of research projects came up.

Professor Birthe Dinesen gave a keynote on: “Using digital health to make integrated care a reality in Denmark – what have we learned so far?” No doubt that Denmark is in the forefront in Europe within digital health services. But we still have challenges like equity of health, integration of data across sectors between different IT systems, how to match patients/citizens ehealth literacy with the right technologies, implementation of digital technologies in a faster mode etc.

Fredag den 26. april havde det Sundhedsvidenskabelige Fakultet ved Aalborg Universitet besøg af ambassadør Rene Dinesen fra den danske ambassade i London. Formål med besøget var at give en introduktion til forskning i digital sundhed.

Dekan Lars Hvilsted bød velkommen til mødet og institutleder Kim Dremstrup gav en introduktion til forskning i digital sundhed ved Institut for Medicin og Sundhedsteknologi. Fra Laboratorie for Velfærdsteknologi – Digital Sundhed & Rehabilitering fra ExerciseTech gav vi en præsentation af konkrete forskningsprojekter som iTrain (telerehabilitering af KOL-patienter), Future Patient – telerehabilitering af patienter med atrieflimren og Telepal projektet. Vi præsenterede også, hvordan vi arbejder internationalt gennem Transatlantic Telehealth Research Network (TTRN) og Japanese & Danish Research Network on Telehealth and Welfare Technologies (JD TeleTech) i vores forskning.

Lektor Samuel Schmidt præsenterede VentriJect, som er et nyt produkt udsprunget af hans egen forskning, og som måler cardio fitness. Produktet er på vej ind på det engelske marked.

Psykiatridirektør Jan Mainz fra Region Nordjylland præsenterede visioner for forskning inden for børne- og ungepsykiatrien, som bygger på inspiration fra UK.

Det var et udbytterigt møde. Tak til ambassadør Rene Dinesen for at besøge AAU SUND. Og tak til alle oplægsholdere. Endelig en tak til sundhedsdiplomat Joakim Barron-Mikkelsen ved den danske ambassade i London for at facilitere mødet. Vi ser frem til mere samarbejde med UK inden for digital sundhed i fremtiden.

Velkommen til nye studentermedhjælpere ved Laboratorie for Velfærdsteknologi – Digital Sundhed & Rehabilitering ved Institut for Medicin og Sundhedsteknologi på AAU SUND.

Størstedelen af vores nuværende hold af studentermedhjælpere bliver færdig med deres kandidatgrad i juni måned, og derfor har vi ansat nye studerende fra Sundhedsteknologi, Datalogi og Industriel Medicin. De studerende hjælper med opgaver som litteratursøgning, pakning af udstyr til hjemmemonitorering hos hjertepatienter, interviews, dataanalyse og afvikling af møder og workshops i samskabelsesprocesser. Vores nuværende studentermedhjælpere skal hjælpe med at oplære de nye de næste par måneder. Vi glæder os til at samarbejde med jer.

Course objective

The aim of the PhD course is to give a comprehensive introduction to research methods used in the different phases of the innovation process for digital health technologies such as telehealth, home monitoring, mHealth, video consultation, artificial intelligence (AI), clinical robots, etc.

Thus, PhD students will during the course learn about relevant research methods and their strengths and weaknesses in the design, assessment and implementation of digital health technologies. During the course the students will examine the possibilities for using the methods in their own PhD project.

The course focus on interdisciplinary research methods, assessment of the societal value of technologies, patient involvement, organizational challenges and have an interdisciplinary faculty and students from medicine, nursing, health policy, engineering, etc.

The course is relevant for PhD-students with interest in research in design, assessment and implementation of digital health technologies, including telemedicine, home monitoring, AI and clinical robots. Senior researchers with interest in these areas are also welcome.

Odense University Hospital is leading in European research and practical use of digital health technologies. During all days, clinicians from the hospital will participate and present examples of the use of digital health technologies in the clinical practise. In addition, all days will involve group work and students will give a presentation at the last day of the course and present their use of the scientific disciplines described during the course in their own research project.

The course is organized in collaboration with TTRN – Transatlantic Telemedicine Research Network and involves researchers from Danish and US universities including UC Berkeley, UC Davis and Cleveland Clinic.

Kalpit Ballal has defended his PhD thesis: “Evaluation of Celluar IoT Technologies for Critical Application” at DTU.

Kalpit made his PhD thesis as part of the research program Future Patient in collaboration between DTU and AAU.

Kalpit has developed and tested a new ECG application to be used for cardiac patients.

Congratulation to Kalpit with a successful defence and a well deserved PhD degree.
